Mental Health Awareness Month: Where Veterans can go for help

It is not uncommon for Servicemembers to experience post-traumatic stress after serving. According to the PTSD Foundation of America, there are as many as 400,000 Servicemembers battling PTSD. The foundation also states that of those returning home with PTSD symptoms, less than 40 percent will seek treatment.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we at Homes For Our Troops want all Veterans to know there is no shame in reaching out for help. The HFOT staff is always available to Veterans if they need assistance, information on resources, or even just to talk.

There are many organizations and resources offering support to Veterans for PTSD; here are a few:

VA Vet Center Program Vet Centers offer a wide range of services to Veterans and their families at 300 community-based Vet Center locations. http://www.vetcenter.va.gov/

Home Base Program-Clinical Intensive Care Program (National/Regional) 617-724-5202   http://www.homebase.org/clinical-care/clinical-care-support/intensive-clinical-program-national-regional/

Home Base has the country’s first two-week Intensive Clinical Program (ICP) to treat Veterans and Families who are struggling with the invisible wounds of war, including post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury (TBI), military sexual trauma, depression, anxiety and co-occurring substance use disorders. Based in Boston, the organization serves Veterans and Families from across the country. The Intensive Clinical Program offers a holistic and innovative approach to clinical care. As of July 2017, Home Base began opening up treatment to Vietnam era Veterans.

Home Base’s New England Warrior Health and Fitness Program is a free, six-month program designed to help Service Members and Veterans—men and women—in the Boston Metro-area improve their physical health and well-being through supervised physical exercise, education about healthy eating, living, sleep hygiene, stress management and the health benefits of physical activity.

Home Base Program-Warrior Health & Fitness:  Southwest Florida

The Southwest Florida Warrior Health and Fitness Program is a free, six-month program for up to 60 post-9/11 Southwest Florida Veterans annually. Warrior Health and Fitness is designed to help Service Members and Veterans —men and women—improve their physical health and well- being through supervised physical exercise, education about healthy eating, living, sleep hygiene, stress management and the health benefits of physical activity.
