CPL JOSHUA STEIN

Mission Accomplished on Dec. 18, 2010

 
On Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, Army Corporal Joshua Stein lost both legs and sustained severe arm injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Taji, Iraq. The driver of a Bradley Fighting Vehicle on a patrol mission, an IED blast tore through the vehicle’s engine and then through his legs, causing immediate amputations.

Somehow continuing to control the Bradley with two broken arms and opening the rear hatch of the vehicle, allowing his team to exit, he then opened his own hatch as well, letting his team know that he had been hit before falling unconscious. Within minutes he was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Balad, Iraq, and then to Landstuhl, Germany, before finally arriving at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. Waking a month later, CPL Stein learned the severity of his injuries and began to focus on his recovery and his future.

CPL Stein enjoys spending time with his wife Nicole and their four daughters. He enjoys working on his classic truck, sled hockey, fishing, riding ATVs, and off-roading. His specially adapted home enables him to focus on being a father and husband, without worrying about fitting into a room or getting something for himself. He finished motorcycle mechanic school in July 2017 and plans to work for a Texas Harley-Davidson dealer.

He is grateful to everyone who made his specially adapted home a reality, stating, “People who care enough to do something out of gratitude and selflessness is a blessing upon them. This country wouldn’t be what it is without Americans like you! I am proud to be an American and to have fought for this beautiful land.”
