SGT Russell Carter

Lithia, FL

Mission Accomplished on August 10, 2024

Russell Carter was a middle school student during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Inspired by a desire to protect his country after graduation, he enlisted in Army as an Infantryman with the 101st Airborne Division, deploying to Afghanistan in 2010.

On Jan. 2, 2011, the vehicle carrying Sergeant Carter and six others malfunctioned, causing it to lose steering control and veer off a bridge. SGT Carter sustained a spinal cord injury, paralyzing him from the neck down, and a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Now medically retired, Russell’s former non-adapted home presented challenges with narrow doorways and cramped rooms. He often had to rely on others for help with daily tasks, such as preparing meals.

A recipient of a specially adapted custom HFOT home, Russell can now live independently. The single-level, open floor plan and wider doorways allow him to access every room. He looks forward to advocating and volunteering with Veteran organizations that go on fishing and hunting trips. He shoots pool with the American Poolplayers Association (APA) league and is interested in training for events with Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA).

Originally from Pennsylvania, Russell chose to build his home in Florida for the climate and to be close to his medical team.

Russell wants HFOT donors and supporters to know they are making an impact. “Being a productive member of society while having some independence is important to me and this is a huge step toward getting those things back. Thank you so much for your time and dedication to myself and fellow severely injured Veterans.”
