SGT Christopher Leverkuhn
Kerrville, TX
Christopher Leverkuhn joined the military to pay for his education. He enjoyed the routine and discipline of the Army.
On Jan. 2, 2004, during his first deployment, Sergeant Leverkuhn, a petroleum supply specialist, was serving with the 209th Quartermaster Company, United States Army Reserve when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Ramadi, Iraq. SGT Leverkuhn lost his right leg below the knee and sustained other injuries in the blast.
Today, Chris and his wife Brooke are busy raising their four children, Caiden, Brooklyn, Adeline, and Avery. Chris volunteers with the nonprofit Operation Comfort, an organization that empowers Veterans to overcome the trauma of the past by focusing on the future. When Chris is not kicking the soccer ball around with his children, he enjoys playing sled hockey and cycling. Although he leads an active lifestyle, he faces daily obstacles within his current living environment. The family lives in a home on a steep hill, making it difficult to use a wheelchair or prosthetics inside and outside the home. Chris often uses crutches to navigate and risks falling.
Receiving a specially adapted custom Homes For Our Troops home with an open floorplan and accessible bathroom will alleviate Chris’ safety concerns and enable him to be the husband and father he desires to be. The freedom and independence Chris will regain in the home will give him more time to spend with his children. He looks forward to being able to safely play in the yard with them and having the space to pursue his hobby of woodworking. Without the stress of a non-accessible home, Chris and his family will be able to start planning for their future. Brooke would like to go back to school.
Chris and his family plan to remain in Texas where they currently live to be close to family and the good school systems.
Chris says it is hard to put into words the thanks he has for HFOT’s donors and supporters. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving my family and me the opportunity to receive such an amazing gift. The impact you are making is life changing.”
