SGT Michael Gallardo
New Braunfels, TX
Additional updates to Michael’s bio. Full content below:
In 2004, Michael Gallardo enlisted in the Army, inspired to serve his country after the 9/11 attacks. Born on September 11, 1984, Michael believed the terrorist attacks that occurred on his birthday were a sign that he was called to a higher purpose.
On February 7, 2007, during his first combat deployment, Sergeant Gallardo was serving as a cavalry scout with the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq when he was injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast. He sustained severe damage to his left foot, a broken wrist, tinnitus, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
He was medically evacuated to Landstuhl, Germany before returning stateside to Brooke Army Medical Center. After 26 surgeries, doctors amputated his left leg below the knee.
Mike and his wife, Jahnean, are parents to sons, Tristian and Oliver. An avid fitness enthusiast, Mike placed 7th in the Javelin Throw at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. He finds his current house confining because of the multi-level layout where stairs pose a daily challenge. He’s forced to wear his prosthetic leg to access the home’s upper floors.
A specially adapted custom HFOT home will give Mike the ability to move from room to room in his wheelchair in a single-level, barrier-free environment. The mortgage-free home will also reduce household stress and allow the entire family to focus on the activities they enjoy. “With a home without stairs, I won’t have to stay home to rest my leg. I can go out and enjoy life with my precious family,” he says.
Originally from California, Mike is choosing to build his home in Texas to be near family and friends.
Mike would like HFOT donors and supporters to know it’s difficult to find the words to express his gratitude. “There’s nothing I can say to thank you enough for helping me and my family enjoy a better life. We are truly grateful for your generosity and support.”
