One of the most important aspects of HFOT’s mission is Rebuilding Lives. Through the gift of a specially adapted custom home, some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while serving our nation is restored.
In February of 2022, HFOT Veteran home recipient Army Sergeant Justin Callahan and his wife, Katie, and their young children, Callum, Connor, and Cadence, received the keys to their specially adapted custom home in Jupiter, Florida. A busy mom of three, Katie says the single-level, barrier-free environment continues to have a profound impact on the family’s quality of life now that Justin, who lost his left leg in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Afghanistan, is finally able to move safely and easily from room to room in his wheelchair.
“At our former house, when I wanted to set up activities for the kids, I had to break stuff down and put it back up because Justin didn’t have the room to maneuver in his wheelchair. In our HFOT home, the kids have an area, and Justin can safely be with them in his chair. He has the freedom to turn 360 degrees in every room and access every part of the house, inside and outside,” Katie says. “It’s the biggest thing ever.”
Both Justin and Katie would like to thank HFOT donors and supporters for their forever home. “Raising and growing a family is an American dream…we can’t thank you enough for giving us a home that allows us to focus on the important things in life.”
This Mother’s Day, Homes For Our Troops would like to extend our gratitude to all the mothers who work tirelessly to provide a safe and secure home for their families. We recognize and celebrate your hard work, tenacity, strength, and commitment.
Happy Mother’s Day from Homes For Our Troops.
