Army SGT Brandon Deaton

Keystone Heights, FL

Brandon Deaton joined the Army in 2005 to carry on his family’s legacy of military service.

On March 24, 2007, Sergeant Deaton was serving as an infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division in Sadr al Yusufiyah, Iraq, when his vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device (IED). He sustained bilateral ruptured eardrums, a torn rotator cuff, back and shrapnel injuries, and severe injuries to his left leg.

He was medically evacuated to Balad for immediate treatment and subsequently transported to Landstuhl, Germany, for additional surgeries. Stateside, he was sent to Walter Reed Medical Center for the remainder of his rehabilitation. In 2007, after more than 50 surgeries, Brandon had his left leg amputated below the knee.

Medically retired, Brandon looks forward to a stable home environment where he and his wife, Carrie, can raise their daughter, Shelby. In their current non-adapted house, Brandon is unable to access the entire home in his wheelchair, forcing him to wear his prosthetic for extended periods.

A specially adapted custom HFOT home with widened doorways and hallways will give him wheelchair access to every room in the single-level, open layout. The therapy tub will allow him to reduce his stress and anxiety levels while providing pain relief for injuries related to wearing his prosthetic.

Brandon is choosing to build his home in Florida for the warm climate and to be close to his family.

Brandon would like HFOT donors and supporters to know he is grateful for their support. “This home will give me back my sense of freedom and independence. After fighting for our country, I feel I lost some of that. Thank you so much for supporting this amazing organization.”
