Army SGT Moses Sonera

La Vernia, TX

A father of two when he enlisted in the military in 1998, Moses Sonera joined the Army to provide for his family.

On March 30, 2004, Sergeant Sonera was serving as a combat engineer with the 65th Engineer Battalion, 25th Infantry Division in Kirkuk, Iraq, when he was injured in a mortar attack, resulting in severe damage to his left foot, tinnitus, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Moses was medically evacuated to Landstuhl, Germany, before transferring stateside for lengthy stays in numerous hospitals. After a year of limb salvage treatment, his left leg was amputated below the knee.

Moses and his wife, Maria, are proud parents to Moses Jr., Melany, Maria, and Matthew. They enjoy attending church and spending time together as a family.

Originally from Puerto Rico, Moses is choosing to build his home in Texas for the close-knit community and rural landscape.
