LCPL Matias Ferreira
Smithtown, NY
Mission Accomplished on Nov. 10, 2018
Matias Ferreira was born in Uruguay and immigrated to the U.S. (Atlanta) with his family when he was six, joining the Marines at 19. He took his oath to become an American citizen in September 2010, days before he deployed to Afghanistan as a machine gunner with the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines.
In January 2011, during his first deployment, Lance Corporal Ferreira lost his legs and broke his pelvis after stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED) in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
He was medically evacuated to Bagram before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany. Stateside, he underwent additional surgery and treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Matias and his wife, Megan, are proud parents to Matias Jr. A police officer for the Suffolk County Police Department in New York, Matias enjoys playing hockey, golf, and softball.
A specially adapted custom HFOT home with widened doorways, a roll-in shower/bathroom, pull-down shelving and lowered countertops in the kitchen allow Matias to live barrier-free when he chooses to be in his wheelchair. The mortgage-free home allows him to focus on his recovery and rebuilding his life.
Matias would like to thank HFOT donors and supporters for allowing him and other Veterans to live with less stress and complications. “We are forever grateful for all that you have done and continue to do for people like myself,” he says.
