This holiday season, as we celebrate the spirit of goodwill and gratitude, the Board of Directors, leadership, and staff at Homes For Our Troops are humbled and thankful for the tremendous display of commitment and support we’ve witnessed throughout the year of our 20th anniversary.
Because of you, there are now over 400 severely injured Veterans and their families living in barrier-free environments, celebrating the holidays safely and securely in the specially adapted custom homes they need and deserve.
Veterans such as 2016 HFOT home recipient Army Sergeant First Class Edgar Barrera, the artist of this year’s holiday card, who lost his legs and left hand in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Afghanistan.
Edgar credits his HFOT home with allowing him to focus on pursuing his passion and profession. A freelance artist with a bachelor’s degree in media arts and animation from The Art Institute of San Antonio, Edgar spoke to how his education opened doors in his artistic expression.
“When I started my art degree, my focus was on traditional fine arts. When I transferred to the Art Institute, I was introduced to digital art, in particular 3D modeling, which ended up being my focus. Creating art in a digital plane is the same as having an open canvas—the only difference is the medium. The creative process is still the same,” he says.
As we approach 2025, we look forward to opening more doors of opportunity to those who served and sacrificed for our nation as we continue our mission of Building Homes and Rebuilding Lives.
Wishing you and yours a peaceful and joyous holiday season.
