SPC Michael S. Monthervil
SAN ANTONIO, FL
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ON JUNE 17, 2023
Michael Monthervil always knew he wanted to join the Army. He attended college for several years before he enlisted in the Infantry.
On July 28, 2014, during a training exercise with the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan, Specialist Monthervil fell and injured his spinal cord, resulting in the loss of use of his legs.
He was medically evacuated to Landstuhl, Germany, before returning stateside to Walter Reed Medical Center, where he received additional treatment. He was transferred to the Tampa VA Medical Center for extensive rehabilitation.
Michael plays wheelchair rugby, often traveling to local and national competitions. He also finds drawing and painting to be beneficial in his recovery, and has auctioned some of his paintings at various events.
A specially adapted custom HFOT home has allowed Michael to focus more on his recovery. His previous home was not wheelchair accessible, making it difficult for him to complete daily tasks. Michael now has a home where he can live safely and independently.
Michael would like to thank HFOT donors and supporters for their generosity. “It means everything to me to have a place where I can have my independence back,” he says.
