SPC Luis Puertas Orlando, FL Project Completed on Dec. 17, 2011 On Sept. 20, 2006, Army Specialist Luis Puertas lost both legs after an explosively formed penetrator (EFP) explosion in Baghdad, Iraq. SPC Puertas was the driver of the lead HMMWV on a daily patrol near Sadar City when an unseen EFP, planted at the base of a light pole, launched into the vehicle, amputating both of his legs on impact, and leaving him trapped beneath the 400-pound up-armored door….

SGT RYAN NEWELL Marion County, KS Mission Accomplished on June 26, 2010   In January 2008, Army Sergeant Ryan Newell was deployed to Afghanistan when he lost both legs in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion. After being stabilized and with flight conditions improved, SGT Newell was airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany. He was later airlifted to Walter Reed, where he spent nearly a year undergoing treatment and rehabilitation. SGT Newell returned to Kansas to continue his therapies closer to home….
